The perfect mix of real-time strategy and tower defense - Thronefall Quick First Impressions

SHOULD I PLAY THRONEFALL?

Play it. Thronefall is a beautiful and engaging game that brings something different to the strategy genre. It plucks out the best parts of real-time strategy titles and takes elements from tower defense games to create the perfect combination of both genres in a challenging and wildly fun experience—resulting in gameplay where I’m attacking oncoming waves of enemies and building a base full of towers and farms to survive.

TIME PLAYED

I played Thronefall for three hours. I managed to complete seven runs with each one lasting anywhere between fifteen to twenty-five minutes. I’ve unlocked nearly a dozen perks, as well as three weapons. I’m currently making my way to the fourth area in the game.

WHAT’S AWESOME ABOUT THRONEFALL?

• Defending a village. Thronefall adds its own pinch of tower defense gameplay in the form of mercenary attacks that come in waves. I got to choose when these waves approached, but I couldn’t continuously farm gold or expand my village without them and their resources. Defending my village from waves of enemies and building a town off of their sweet deaths was exhilarating.
• Upgrading towers and buildings. Bolstering my army and building one heck of a fortress has been my favorite thing to do in Thronefall. While I wasn’t free to build wherever I wanted, I still enjoyed placing buildings at designated spots across the battleground and upgrading them as much as I could.

• Planning the perfect approach to victory. The greatest and most satisfying feeling of playing any strategy game is winning because of your own successful tactics—and Thronefall has been the perfect stage to test my wits. I absolutely loved planning strategies on ways to win different matches using a wide range of playstyles, perks, and units. In one level, I utilized ranged units and towers to quickly take down enemies from afar, and in another I used spearmen and heavy swords to slash down whatever came my way.
• Coming prepared for a battle. Before entering a match, I could choose to bring stuff into battle like weapons, perks, and even buffs that provided experience at the cost of a disadvantage. Even though it does take a while for new perks and weapons to appear, I had a blast experimenting with all the different combinations.

• A stylized medieval look. Thronefall uses a low-poly art style with cartoonish, medieval characters and a lot of heavy shading to provide depth. While simple, these unique visuals are beautiful and pleasant to look at.

WHAT NEEDS IMPROVEMENT IN THRONEFALL?

• Takes some time to open up. A lot of the content and customizable perks in Thronefall appear over time after multiple matches. Despite this slow format continuously keeping me surprised and engaged, it was a little disappointing that I couldn’t try out different things because I hadn’t played long enough. The game could benefit from a sandbox feature or mode in which all structure upgrades, perks, and weapons were already unlocked or an update that sped up progress.

Thronefall - An EARLY ACCESS Tower Defense Base Builder That's AWESOME!
Thronefall recently released in Early Access on Steam and this game is so much fun I didn't want to put it down. The gameplay of Thronefall has you building a base over a period of time, and when you run out of gold you have to brave the night and fend off the enemy forces while trying to keep the heart of your base alive. You earn gold from the houses, mills and pretty much every building you make, as well as when you kill the enemies. When you survive the night, all the gold will head towards you like you're a gold vacuum cleaner. You can also upgrade your buildings and walls to make them stronger. Also, if you fail to keep your base alive, that's okay, you will level up regardless of winning or losing, and you will get stronger unlocks because you leveled up. Which you can then use in your next attempts.

A minimalistic RTS game on all fronts | First Impressions - Thronefall
At its core, Thronefall employs a straightforward gameplay structure divided into day and night phases. The day phase involves constructing your base using coins earned from various structures such as farms and houses. As well as structures for troops and upgrades, and defense installations. The strategic placement of these structures is predetermined, deviating from the typical freedom seen in many strategy games. While this limitation may seem restrictive, it streamlines the gameplay and focuses the player's attention on resource management and defensive preparations.
