While I’ve never played Vampire Survivors before, this clone has gotten me thinking that maybe I should give it a try. Return to Abyss is a Vampire Survivors copycat, but instead of vampires and bats it’s a bunch of demons and monsters. Despite some technical issues and a few translation errors, Return to Abyss is a really fun survival game with roguelite elements that’s kept me entertained for the past hour. As someone who’s never really ventured into the roguelite shoot 'em up genre, I wasn’t prepared for the amount of chaos and action that came my way. Return to Abyss plopped me straight into the fight—with a little guidance of course—and had me shooting monsters left and right, upgrading weapons, and completely obliterating demons.
The gameplay mechanics were pretty simple and easy to understand: shoot stuff, get experience to level up and upgrade weapons or stats, and then repeat. The only actual level of depth was navigating an area filled with demons while trying to stay alive. Oh, and the roguelite element of figuring out which of the cool upgrades to choose after leveling up. And while that might not sound revolutionary or challenging at all, it’s definitely one hell of a time.
Return to Abyss doesn’t show off and that’s alright. It’s about the chaotic and wildly fun roguelite gameplay that these kinds of games are known for and it delivers that experience near-perfectly. The only issues were the text translation in some parts where things weren’t spelled correctly or styled the right way and lagging. Beyond that, Return to Abyss was a pleasant experience and a great first step into this world of shoot ‘em ups.
