Battle Royale, an epic and heavily addicting genre that all but needs introduction by now. From titles like H1Z1, PUBG and Fortnite that started it all, to Apex, Naraka, Warzone and others, the genre is ever evolving and still going strong. But alas, one's success is the doom of other. Today we'll be taking a look at the forgotten battle royale games. Let's get started!
1. Ring of Elysium (2018-2023)
RoE was an amazing free to play tpp/fpp battle royale game developed by Aurora Studio and published by TCH Scarlet Limited, each a subsidiary of Tencent Games.
Back at the time Mt.Diona map was released, this game hit the peak of popularity, and no doubt, it was even better than PUBG. All the popular youtubers from my country were playing it, like, it was that epic. But bad development choices, lead to bad future. They removed the map that got them popularity and playerbase in the first place, and from then on, everything went downhill. By the time I could play the game on my new PC...well I couldn't anymore, because of the game's shutdown. I'll forever miss this game even though I've never got the chance to play it myself. :(
2. Hopeless Land: Fight for Survival (2018-2020)
Hopeless Land was a third person battle royale game heavily inspired by PUBG and it seems it was designed to be HK HERO Entertainment's answer to PUBG Mobile (well obviously, lol). The game was designed to have a fairly low size (about 300mb, I think), and as you can see from the screenshots, the graphics were potato, meaning...target playerbase = low end devices. This was PUBG Mobile Lite before Lite was even released. Sadly I got to play this one only once before the shutdown. The reason for it's shutdown is obvious, who would play this when you have the more popular PUBG Mobile Lite?
3. PUBG Mobile: Marching (2018-2019)
PUBG Mobile Marching (previously known as Army Attack), or better known as PUBG Mobile Timi, was a PUBGM version developed by Tencent's Timi Studio exclusively for China. It was what Game for Peace is today. It had slightly better shaders and mechanics were more true to it's PC origin. Aside from this, I couldn't find much info about it. But it was definitely slightly superior to the Global version.
4. Cyber Hunter (2019-2024)
Cyber Hunter was a sci-fi third person battle royale game developed and published by NetEase. Because of the focus of competing with PUBGM and seeing who can copy and get lawsuits more, this was a breath of a fresh air. Sci-fi thematic, abilities, gadgets, parkour, dodge mechanics, grappling hooks? This game had it all. Hats off to NetEase for making an actually good game. Luckily I had played this on PC and phone for some time, but nonetheless it saddened me when I saw that shutdown notice. Cyber Hunter, you'll be missed.
5. Rules of Survival (2018-2022)
Rules of Survival was a third person battle royale game developed by NetEase. It was heavily inspired by PUBG, but retained unique features of it's own (art style, mechanics, maps...), but nonetheless this and Knives Out were hit with lawsuits for audio-visual copyright infringement by PUBG Corporation. The game was officially available on Steam too, but it didn't help them retain the playerbase much.

H1Z1 Battle Royale (2015-TTD)
The game that started it all, and the only survivor from this list. Winner winner, chicken dinner. H1Z1 or simply known as Z1 Battle Royale is a third person battle royale game developed and published by Daybreak Game Company. It became it's own standalone game after the original H1Z1 was divided into H1Z1 King of The Hill and H1Z1 Just Survive. Despite the bad and buggy launch the game quickly sold over 1M copies. Seems like this game's downfall was devs canceling the Just Survive, overhauling the combat mechanics and letting the cheaters run rampant. RIP. But as the servers are still up, and there's a small player count keeping it alive, perchance, we might see this game lively again?
And that's all for this article. Hope you enjoyed some bullshitting and nostalgia combined. Have a nice day/night and game on!
Since this topic seems interesting and the post did well, I might make a Part 2. There are quite a few forgotten gems out there.
