Last Sunday I went to the excavations of Herculaneum, a modest town south of Naples where lies, under 25 meters of depth, a buried city from the Roman era; it had no connection with Hercules, a deity worshipped but never existed in the flesh. Herculaneum was covered by the same eruption that destroyed its more famous neighbor, Pompeii, in 79 AD which was quickly buried by a cloud of ash, however, Herculaneum escaped unscathed from the first part of the eruption, because the wind blew in the opposite direction. In the evening, when the Herculaneum residents returned to their homes, the same column of ash collapsed, due to the low pressure, and a pyroclastic flow, or a superheated avalanche of gas and rock, hurled itself along the walls of the crater incinerating everything. Initially it was thought that the inhabitants of the city had fled because almost no skeletons had been found. But in the 80s, excavations of old chambers found the remains of 300 bodies piled up. The same ones who were hopefully waiting for help to arrive. Even though they were sheltered from the ash, the heat of 500°C killed them instantly. After the first eruption, five more flows covered the city with a layer of rock and ash 25 meters deep. This formed a hermetic seal that preserved it for the next 1700 years. The new city of Herculaneum grew on top and the ruins were rediscovered only in the 18th century when someone who was drilling a well hit a building instead of water. We will gather information on the first excavation campaigns by meeting the protagonists of those archaeological discoveries such as Karl Weber.
