Hey Tap Tap Family! I just finished playing The Dark Queen of Mortholme, and let me tell you—this is one of the most unique takes on a boss fight I’ve ever experienced. We’re always used to fighting the final boss, but this time, we ARE the final boss. This game give us the feel how a game boss feel when a unknown person come to your house and try to kill you and everytime you kill him he come back 😅.
It’s a short game, but the concept and execution make it stand out. So, is it worth of your time? Let’s find out!
Overview
The game is a pixel-art narrative-driven boss fight developed as a unique “anti-game” experience. Instead of playing as the hero, you take on the role of the Dark Queen, the ultimate enemy at the end of a Souls-like game.
Your goal? Stop the hero from defeating you.
But there’s a catch—the hero resurrects after every battle, learning from each defeat and coming back stronger. And that’s where things get interesting. Because every time he die he know what's yours play style and Adapt it and in the end you will die. It's like that super villian from marvel comics adaptoid.
Gameplay Experience
At first, I thought, Okay, just a standard boss battle. But after my first fight, I realized the real twist—the hero gets better every time he comes back. And after 5 Or 6 times he became so powerful I miss most of my attacks 😅.
Key features
✅ Three main attacks – A powerful mace swing, a flame charge, and summoning a magic pillar.
✅ The hero adapts – Dodging attacks, getting stronger, and dealing more damage as the battle continues.
✅ Strategic combat – It’s not just button-mashing; you have to time your attacks well.
✅ Dialogues between fights – The conversations between the hero and the Dark Queen make the experience feel deep and philosophical.
The fights feel challenging but fair, and as the battle goes on, you start wondering—Is this fight even winnable? And in the end you find out what will happened.
Controls
The controls are super simple, but that makes the experience even better.
✅ Movement is smooth – You can reposition yourself before launching attacks.
✅ Attacks are mapped to different keys – Easy to use but require good timing.
✅ No complicated mechanics – The game focuses more on the experience than on deep combat mechanics.
Graphics and Sound
The game has a simple but effective pixel-art style. Similar to other games like Blasphemous, Castlevania, Dead Cells, Katana Zero. The dark fantasy setting fits the theme, and the character designs look great for an 8-bit game.
And the music? It’s subtle but atmospheric. The boss fight music builds tension, and the dialogue sequences have a calm but eerie tone, making the story more immersive, and don't ask me why I use same words for sound in every review.
Story and Characters
I won’t spoil too much, but the dialogues between the hero and the Dark Queen are what make this game special.
As you fight, you start questioning your role as the final boss. The hero refuses to stop, and the Queen starts reflecting on her existence. It turns into a deep conversation about destiny, purpose, and whether this battle even matters.
Honestly, the story hit harder than I expected for such a short game. This give you feel of that boss you kill in every game you play.
Pros and Cons
✅ Unique concept – Playing as the final boss is a fresh experience
✅ Engaging dialogue – Adds depth to the fight
✅ Challenging but fair combat
✅ Cool pixel-art aesthetic
✅ Completely free on itch.io
❎ Short length – The game ends in about 20 minutes
❎ Limited replayability – Once you finish the story, there’s not much reason to replay
