If you’ve ever played Rust, you might enjoy playing Mission EVO but I’d still strongly suggest skipping the game until it addresses its performance issues. Mission EVO is an open-world multiplayer survival game where you’re placed on an island and must eliminate wildlife, creatures, and other players to stay alive and win the game.
Mission EVO is actually quite similar to Rust, so if you’ve ever played it, this game will feel pretty easy to you. In Mission EVO, I had to choose which mode I wanted to play between standard and casual. The only difference between these modes is that it's a lot harder to survive in standard mode than it is in casual.
After choosing to play casual mode, I was dropped into a session (which is basically a match that lasts seven days) and I needed to collect embers to win the game. Embers drop from bosses located across the map and function as score points which are then tallied at the end of a session. Although I haven’t really gotten that far into the game yet, I’ve already started working my way to it.
As soon as I landed on the island, I had to build a base where I could safely reside and build whatever tools or structures I needed. The game guided me through quick tips and helped me lay down the foundation for my base. Thanks to all the different configurations and tools, I spent a lot of time building structures and expanding this base and I probably could continue doing so if I didn’t need to go out into the world every now and then. From here, I had to research new studies, upgrade equipment and structures, and collect resources across the map which I found really fun and entertaining.
Mission EVO continued to get deeper and more complex the farther I went and after playing for an hour and a half, I feel like I’ve only touched the surface. The game looks pretty good too. The interface is easy to navigate and the visuals look polished. In terms of performance, though, Mission EVO falls short. I encountered a lot of irritating issues while playing that nearly made me quit the game. I had a rough time logging into the game because it would keep on crashing and I even got multiple pop-up notifications saying that I had to update the client because of a bug (although it never explained what the bug was). The login window would freeze from time to time as well. In-game, I couldn’t mine stone either which greatly hindered my progress since I needed the resource to research new studies. I tried restarting the game and going back and forth from the lobby to the session and nothing worked which felt really frustrating.
That said, if you can move past these issues, though, then maybe Mission EVO might be worth considering. However, I’d reckon it would be better to come back once it fully releases since it’s still in its open beta testing phase and will likely fix these performance issues in the future.
