[Exclusive interview] Join Spiritle in a captivating turn-based strategy adventure!

Spiritle, a cross-platform 4-player turn-based pairing strategy game, is gonna release today on June 28! Developed by Fabled Game, an indie studio which is also the development team behind the roguelike deckbuilder Pirates Outlaws, Spiritle continues the strategic gameplay but in a totally different style and manner. We are super happy to have this opportunity to interview Fabled Game Studio and wanna invite all of you to join us in a captivating turn-based strategy adventure in Spiritle.
TapTap: It’s really a pleasure to meet you, in the form of a written interview. Your latest work Spiritle is set to officially release on June 28, and for those TapTap players who may not know this game before, could you briefly introduce Spiritle? What can be expected from this game?
✍️Fabled Game: Spiritle is a cross-platform 4-player turn-based pairing strategy game. Before the game begins and Board is generated, players select a Spirit with unique ability, skills, and an equipment during the preparation phase. During the battle, players deploy their character on the Board and collect a quest. After the deploy phase, each turn players are invited to use 2 movement points to move and open tiles, if the 2 opened lands are similar the player can use his Attack to any opponents. The party ends when there is only one left Spirit or after 5 Rounds.

TapTap: For Fabled Game, to “stand out with creative designs and unique projects” is the key idea that your team all want to convey and implement through games. In the case of Spiritle, what do you think that really differentiates the game from others of the same genre?
✍️Fabled Game: In my opinion, being creative is to be able to merge at least 2 ideas together. And being original is to be unique enough in your visual and concept to create an environment to stand out. For Spiritle, it all starts with the simple idea of turning a basic pair/memory game into a more strategic party game. What makes Spiritle different from other games of the same genre. It's not just a classic pairing game. Its wide skills and equipment choices during the character selection and optimization to create combos and build a strategy to defeat other players. With currently 3 game modes: a ranked Classic 1v1v1v1 mode, a competitive Cooperative mode (for 2 or a single player) and a Custom mode to play with friends. In a unique fantastic and enchanted environment divided in 4 Seasons, Spiritle experience is unique in his genre.

TapTap: Let’s go back to the very beginning of the story. What was the motivation or source of inspiration for making Spiritle?
✍️Fabled Game: Board game enthusiast, Spiritle was created from a passion to create a party game that could be played with friends. The board game offers a large variation of gameplay and creations for us to develop more around, based on a community. Visually, players can easily spot the character design inspiration and reference to the wonderful Armello. The other sources of inspiration are varied and not necessary representative (Risk, Dofus, Chess, TFT, Mario Party, Among Us...) and there’s not only one genre that stands out, so I would say that the biggest source of inspiration remains all the "board/tactical game" as a whole.
TapTap: In the official FAQ page of Spiritle, you said that “Multitasking, a good planning and a lot of coffee are the key to handle and develop 2 games.” From May 2021, when Spiritle started its very first beta test, to June 2023, when the game’s finally gonna have its official release, it’s really been a long journey. From your perspective, what’s the biggest challenge throughout this process of developing Spiritle?
✍️Fabled Game: As a game producer and art director, the biggest challenge is to create something at least equally good as your previous game Pirates Outlaws. When we started developing the game, we were always keeping Pirates Outlaws up to date with new content and a console release. The party/board game genre is not something easy to explain when you haven't experienced it yourself. Leading a team and members that come from different horizons is a daily challenge as well as creating an imaginary convincing fairy world. Betas and demos are essential to look after errors made during the development, so it is normal to take the necessary time to repair it properly after and before implement more contents (especially when your game is a cross-platform multiplayer game). Since 2021, we have also implemented additional content (Characters, equipment, game modes...) and advanced game mechanics (Day/Night, Seasons...). Nowadays, developing a game on several platforms and trying to earn the trust of a community is not easy, as an indie self-publisher and with a small development team, Fabled Game Studio has nothing to be ashamed of.

TapTap: The general artistic style, especially the impressive character design of Spiritle, as well as your previous work Pirates Outlaws, is pretty iconic. Any behind-the-scenes stories that you can share on this specific aspect?
✍️Fabled Game: Indeed, the “papercraft” visual identity of Pirates Outlaws extends and can be found in Spiritle. Certainly, because I am a French artist and attracted by an artistic direction oriented minimalist and refined graphic design. Elegant when well done, it's also a non-negligible saving production time and that's why it's often used in the indie game industry.
TapTap:  The upcoming Spiritle is a turn-based strategy game, and your previous work Pirates Outlaws is a roguelike card game, which also involves tons of strategic thinking. Is there a reason why your team seems to have a specific preference for this genre? Are there any other genres that you would love to explore in the future?
✍️Fabled Game: Exploring different games is essential for the renewal of creativity and to explore new opportunities. In addition to an explosive and saturated roguelike deck-builder market, it was predicted in advance that we wouldn't make another game like this.I have already more concepts in preparation but nothing to share yet. Our current games and player feedback from the 2 different communities are also a great source of inspiration for Fabled Studio future games.
TapTap:  Any small tips for players who’re gonna try Spiritle?
✍️Fabled Game: Don't skip the tutorial. Then take time to visit the characters panel to see all the skills, before looking at ranked games. In Spiritle, the best ally is your knowledge. Gain experience and be patient. Learn to play Spirits with the ability and skills that suit you best. Use your skills efficiently and find simple combos to mastery.

The art style of the small animals is incredibly cute, but the gameplay feels somewhat challenging.

Spiritle - A Quick Game Review!
Spiritle is a 4 players turn-based strategic battle digital board game. Honestly, I found this game to be very unique in terms of gameplay mechanics, as I had never played a game like this before. And seriously, this game caught my interest right away. This is a PVP game that you will be playing with other players in a 2V2 or 1v1v1v1 match mode. Each character has their own unique abilities and you will need to strategize every movement and skill usage to triumph the battle. This free to play board game definitely will take the ultimate test of your memory recall ability.
