Developer The Astronauts hasn't put out a game since 2014's brilliant adventure game The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. Their next project has finally entered early access, though, and it's very cool and very different from their last release...in a good way!
The new game is titled Witchfire, and while it shares spooky vibes with The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, the core of the game is a roguelike shooter. If that change sounds jarring, you should know that much of the team at The Astronauts was previously at developer People Can Fly, the studio behind satisfyingly over-the-top shooters like Bulletstorm and Painkiller. Witchfire borrows the adrenaline-packed action and gunplay of those titles, but the overall atmosphere is more horror, and it has the roguelike die-upgrade-rinse-repeat formula going on.
So how is it? Well, TapTap editor Ian Boudreau has been playing it, and he's very impressed so far, noting that it's a gorgeous and great shooter that also has a compelling progression system. You can check out his Quick Review for all the details:

If you're itching to try it for yourself, Witchfire is available now in early access on PC exclusively via the Epic Games Store for $39.99. The Astronauts says it is planning to bring it to other PC platforms (i.e. Steam) after around a year, which is also approximately how long the game is planned to be in early access. It's also planned for consoiles at some point in the future.

Witchfire plays like a gunslinging 16th-century Ghostbusters
SHOULD I PLAY WITCHFIRE? Don’t sleep on this one, especially if you’re a fan of weird horror. Witchfire is an interesting single-player shooter built on a concept that’s more similar to extraction shooters like Hunt: Showdown than roguelikes. Armed with arcane weapons, you play as a witch hunter sent by the church to track down a powerful witch in a haunted land. A portal connects this land with your home base, where you can return to upgrade weapons and gain additional powers with materials gathered on expeditions. It’s fun, scary, and dripping with atmosphere.

WitchFire - The new and challenging FPS SHOOTER!
Short Story: Almost everywhere you look these days, you see game after game coming out with online-only or multiplayer features, but never a solid down-to-earth single player game that feels like it's been handled with care by the developers rather than rushed out the door before it's even cooked long enough to be functional. I'm talking about you, PayDay 3... WitchFire is a roguelike that incorporates numerous souls-like characteristics and makes them function, despite the fact that it is still in Early Access.

Witchfire is honestly Addicting [60-Sec. Review]
Witchfire is a grimdark fantasy rogue-like shooter that merges the realm of medieval magic with dark sorcery and guns. You play as a Preyer, an immortal gunslinging hunter hired by the Church, to slay a cadre of demonic husks under the command of a wretched witch. Each of the maps in-game are ever-changing digital playgrounds that you explore at your pace, granting you Arcanas for that specific run by clearing out enemies.
