Don't miss your chance to check out Square Enix's new Splatoon-like party shooter free this weekend

At Summer Game Fest 2023, Square Enix surprised us by announcing a colorful four-versus-four shooter called Foamstars. The game is all about spraying down enemies and the arena with blue, pink, purple, and green bubbles. It drew immediate comparisons to Nintendo's Splatoon series, but it's much more than just a clone. In fact, it was one of our favorite games that we got to try out at Summer Game Fest!
But now you don't have to take our word for it. If you own a PlayStation 5, you can take part in the Foamstars Open Beta Party happening this weekend, from 6 p.m. PDT on September 29, 2023 to 11:59 p.m. PDT on October 1, 2023. The beta event is totally free and open to anyone on PlayStation 5, even if you don't have a PlayStation Plus subscription. Players who participate will even receive a special cosmetic as a thank-you for helping with the test.
Square Enix says the beta will eight playable characters and two game modes. In "Smash the Star" mode, players will attempt to knock out a "star player" on the opposing time, while "Happy Bath Survival" mode will split the two teams of four into "infield" players who must be taken out and "outfield" players who provide support.
For those who don't yet have a PlayStation 5 or are waiting for the full version, you hopefully won't have to wait too much longer. Foamstars will launch on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 sometime in early 2024. TapTap's editors will be jumping into the beta this weekend, and we'll report back on our quick first impressions next week.

SHOULD I PLAY FOAMSTARS?
The Foamstars open beta was a blast. I’m sure some things will change between now and the game’s official release, but based on what I’ve seen, I’d definitely recommend checking it out. Foamstars is clearly inspired by Splatoon, but this 4v4 shooter doesn’t feel like a clone at all. It’s got an intoxicating atmosphere, an instantly charming cast of characters, and some unique gameplay mechanics that make it stand out from other shooters on the market. It seems like it’ll be a great way to blow off some steam or put yourself in a party mood.Â

Foamstars丨Launches on February 6th, Also Available Day One on PlayStation Plus
Square Enix has announced that its 4v4 online party shooter Foamstars will release on February 6th for PS4 and PS5. A new trailer is available, showcasing the gameplay and confirming three modes – Smash the Star, Happy Bath Survival and a new addition, Rubber Duck Party. Check it now. Players can matchmake solo or with friends, unlock new cosmetics to change the looks of characters, and also sport emotes (including the usual poses and dances). If that wasn’t enough, Foamstars will also be available for PlayStation Plus subscribers at launch. It’s part of February’s Monthly Games line-up until March 4th, meaning subscribers from Essential, Extra and Premium tiers can claim it at no extra cost. Interestingly, Square Enix book-ends the trailer by confirming that Foamstars is exclusive to PlayStation consoles till August 5th. It could mean potential PC and Xbox ports down the line.
