MY HERO ULTRA RUMBLE (Reviewed)
Developer: Byking Inc.
Releases: September 28th, 2022
Price: Free To Play
MY HERO ULTRA RUMBLE is a new free-to-play addition to the genre of battle royales that attempts to compete with other existing games that have dominated the genre for the last 5 years most notably Fortnite. Choose your favorite hero or villain, complete with quirks and characteristics, and compete for the top spot!
It's difficult to understand why this game was considered. While it appears alright at first glance, once you get your hands on it and physically start playing it just feels like another jaded attempt at something that didn't need to be a thing, but rather a way for some small studio to attempt to cash in on something popular far down the line. Is the game enjoyable? Yes, it's entertaining and engaging, but a game has to be more than entertaining. It should function properly and be balanced; otherwise, it is just another pay-to-win feature for players to abuse against others.
Features
It doesn't really make sense
You can play as any of the game's heroes/villains' in this game, but only if you have access to a ticket (3/3) at the top of the screen after logging in; otherwise, they are locked. The only method to unlock new characters is to play the game for an inordinate period of time in order to obtain one of the (5+) currencies required to attempt a pull. If you're lucky, you might receive your desired Hero. Otherwise, you will receive nothing but some emotes, clothing and voices to "customize" your hero looks.
Elements of a Gacha and leveling to acquire battle pass, as well as everything else, just seem bad. It takes a long time to level up unless you can win every single match with (2) random and uncoordinated players who will run off and do nothing but die or leave you to die when they were just around you not even a second ago.
A severe leave penalty
Unlike many other games, this one will harshly punish you for leaving. Putting you up with players that actively quit games on a regular basis, making the fact that this game involves team play feel even more frustrating if you disconnect due to internet or simply leave a troll team, which you will encounter frequently. I hated this feature, not that I leave, but I always wanted to get the hell out of the current match because random players are extremely selfish and don't do anything helpful as a team player.
Auto Revive & Revives
If you down, you have three options. You can first try to crawl to safety while your comrades repel the assaults, and you will recover and resurrect on your own. The second option is to have a team member lift you up or transport you to a safer position. The second option is to die and be revived by your teammates if they locate three (3) revive cards that can be combined with your soul to bring you back to life.
Destructible buildings
While it isn't particularly amazing. It's good to see that the elements of your attacks and powers can demolish structures and walls, preventing your opponents from utilizing them as cover or assisting you in making a swift escape though there doesn't really seem to be any real use for this feature outside of the aesthetic visuals.
Issues
Team gameplay only
Whatever game I play, I expect to be able to play alone, especially in a Battle Royale. It's a norm; play with friends or alone, or be trapped with a swarm of uncooperative players. Despite the fact that there is no single player matchmaking, you will find yourself playing it as if it were every round due to how difficult it is to see.
Situational Awareness
There is so much going on on the screen that you can't see anything going on around you half of the time. If someone jumps you with a big aura of special effects, good luck figuring out where you are and where your buddies are, because they have either ran away or are being jumped on by a tag team of grouped voice coms.
Feels like a mobile game
Every aspect of this game appears to have been intended for mobile, but they opted to make it for the PC and Console only and simply preserved the notions of Gacha and in-game currencies and features without really cleaning it up to make sense.
This game could do so well by becoming available for Mobile devices.
Controls are confusing
The interface isn't neat or tidy. There appears to be no limit to how many hotkeys you have to hit to access certain items like your level ups (G), inventory (Tab), Skills and the menu (Exit) which is not used to exit current menus but rather you have to re-tap each individual menu button to close out of it. The first hour or so I had to get used to this feature which just seems like a design oversight. Inventory management had delayed interaction with dropping stuff to clear space. It's just not all that responsive when you just want to drop some items to make room for a card or power.
Crowd Control is absurd
There is no ability to dodge skills or recover quickly when knocked down repeatedly, so if you are up against a competent group of players, all they have to do is chain CC you with a good composition and you will have no chance of recovering and will simply die in seconds. While you can recover this is only when you're not being hit.
No Crossplay
Do you want to play on PC or console with your friends? They should use the same platform as you, because cross-platform play is not available. Something that has the potential to end the game before it has a change to even begin.
Presentation
Unique style of visuals
This game's visual aesthetics are the only thing it has to offer in terms of style and redeemable content. The game is designed to look more like a comic book, with all of your talents and powers showing the jump cut text of "WAM!" and "POW!" but it doesn't feel all that amazing when it takes up so much space and vision while playing.
The worst aspect is that you can't turn these elements off; everything is just so flashy that it hides the actual game behind enormous particle effects and blinding lights, making it extremely easy to become distracted and disoriented during your play.
Gameplay
Simple and repetitive
After you have a team and a selection ready. Once there are enough players, you go in and choose a location to loot, then head with the diminishing zone and try to survive the fairly uneven teams that will most likely chain stun you and win.
The actual game itself is fun once you understand the mechanics, but there isn't much substance here. It's pretty annoying since everything seems to take a long time to activate, and you can't do anything unless you're as far away from people as possible to activate said powers from chests or to drink a shield or healing potion.
It just doesn't feel polished, and it's overall janky and unpleasant, which means you either snipe people from a safe distance, stun them to death, or rush in and then run out to heal up and repeat the process, rather than being able to do that in the middle of a fight because everyone has a lot of AoE or dashes to catch up with you.
Conclusion
It needs severe polish
One issue here is that the game does not respond well when you are chain stunned through the air and unable to use a recovery jump to get to safety.
The map is small and there is just one, which means that no matter how many times you switch to a different character or choose a different place, nothing happens. You run about, loot, get jumped or jumped by another team, and either lose or win.
I don't understand why anyone would really want to this over Fortnite where you can play as a few of the heroes with their crossover. Unless you really enjoy the source material and the world of MHA, there isn't much appeal. HOWEVER
This is not to say I dislike the game; in fact, I love it for what it is and aspires to be, but as previously stated. It desperately needs polish and updates, otherwise it will die and close down, just like many games Bandai Namco distributes or makes.
My main complaint is the forced 3v playstyle. I'd rather play alone because I love surviving in these kinds of games in single player mode. It's a matter of personal preference, but unless you have a group of pals who want to play with you, you won't be able to rely on random individuals to form a team and play as a team.
The game has the potential to improve if they make adjustments to its functionality and provide cross-play functionality so that it does not simply die, because as of right now it just feels like a very shady way to cash in before it's too late.
This concludes my views of this game; while my opinions may be met with criticism, that is what distinguishes gamers; you don't have to like the same things as others, nor do you have to agree with them.
If you want to catch me on one of my streams or locate me on social media, you may do so at the following locations, I'm always playing something new.

Go to Windows settings, date and time, and manually alter it under the region part by clicking on further settings, and then see what the correct time is for your location.

How come a bad game made for console would be a good idea on mobile? If the game is bad there is no reason to port it, leave there. This idea that trash should be ported to mobile to milk cash from children is predatory and stupid.

No matter which way you look at it. The game has a lot of mobile elements and a lot of stuff that don't work properly on PC or really look like it belongs on a PC game, giving it the appearance and feel of a mobile game that would perform best on a mobile device. This game is already predatory, as is any game with a pay-to-win microtransaction feature.
