SHOULD I PLAY HEADBANGERS: RHYTHM ROYALE?
Play it, especially if you can bring some friends. Headbangers: Rhythm Royale offers a refreshing take on battle royales with its rhythm-based minigames and goofy-looking pigeons. I ran into some minor problems with online matchmaking, but I still had a blast with this game’s groovy tests of speed and memory. TIME PLAYED
I played Headbangers: Rhythm Royale for three hours. I’ve played over two dozen games, with each one lasting five to fifteen minutes depending on how long I survived. After spending an hour or so getting acquainted with the different minigames, I’ve managed to take first place in three matches so far.
WHAT’S AWESOME ABOUT HEADBANGERS: RHYTHM ROYALE?
• Playing a bunch of wacky minigames. I had a blast playing all the different minigames in Headbangers. With twenty-three unique activities to come across, matches always felt refreshing and fun. And despite the title, the minigames weren’t all rhythm-based. Some tested the speed of my reactions, and others were memory games. This variety kept things interesting and made the game more challenging.
• Customizing the perfect pigeon attire. I was able to pick out different clothes or accessories for my pigeon to wear and purchase even more cosmetics with resources earned from playing matches. I couldn't stop myself from cracking a smile when I went into matchmaking with my pigeon dressed in a cowboy suit or shark costume.
• Goofy pigeons. I’ve seen games with characters dressed in animal costumes, space beans solving murders, and tic tacs running across spinning obstacles, but I’ve never seen a game with goofy pigeons—and that’s a huge part of the appeal here. I get to play as a stupid-looking, breadcrumb-eating pigeon? Say no more! WHAT SUCKS ABOUT HEADBANGERS: RHYTHM ROYALE?
• Matchmaking can drag. On average, it took me five minutes to connect to a match, find other players, and start a game. Considering how fast matches move and how quickly I sometimes got booted back to the lobby after losing certain minigames, needing to wait this long definitely got on my nerves.
• No other modes or difficulty levels. If you suck at rhythm games like me, you might find it hard settling into Headbangers. The game doesn’t have any added difficulty levels or beginner modes to help newcomers understand different minigames and mechanics. I had to just dive into the action, though it only took about an hour before I felt like I had a pretty good grasp of things.
