Since Rockstar announced the release of the Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer, everyone has been jotting down an early Christmas wishlist of what they want to see in the next GTA, and I’m no different. But what I really want is that feeling I had when I was a kid of possessing something naughty. I want public outcry, protests, and warnings over the offensiveness of the material. I want to pick up my controller and think, “Wow, maybe Rockstar really has gone too far this time.” In a word, I want controversy. Ever since Rockstar first released its famous crime simulator, parents and politicians have been foaming at the mouth at the mere mention of GTA. Although praised for its technical innovation, it’s this pushing of the envelope that really makes the series special.
I remember hearing about the hot coffee mod controversy and thinking, YES, absolutely, this is what I want in my GTA title. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one, as San Andreas went on to sell millions of copies worldwide. People have been pushing for the game to be classified as “adults only,” and though this would never happen due to financial reasons (retail stores can’t sell A/O games), the idea of a GTA that is for adults only seems almost like a natural progression. I mean, let’s face it. Grand Theft Auto is a game where you commit crimes for money. I can’t think of a better premise to turn into an adults-only game, but wouldn’t it be great if the series just went full out and stopped beating around the bush? Full nudity, graphic sex, and a choice on a scale of how bad you’d actually like to be. I’m not talking about a bad porn parody or anything like that. Grand Theft Auto has always been inspired by crime thrillers like Heat, Pulp Fiction, and Scarface and with that it’s always been a bit farcical and silly. An adult-oriented GTA could be more than just a tongue-in-cheek parody of films like this. GTA could be as serious and well-written as a Michael Mann film.
Of course, this is a dream, but it’s this kind of thinking that I want to go into GTA 6. Not just an expansion of the technical features of the series, but an expansion of what me and a lot of fans of the series really love.
That being said, of course, there are some technical elements I’m also looking forward to when it comes to Grand Theft Auto 6. I love the idea of a Bonnie and Clyde duo. In fact, those robbery missions with CJ and Catalina in San Andreas were some of my favorites. And if we’re being honest, GTA has been pretty much a boys-only club, so terrorizing a city through the perspective of a woman is something I can’t wait to see.
In addition, I’d like to see some live events in online mode, some crazy random things like a UFO or plane crashes or secret cult societies? And maybe an in-depth expansion or management system for my criminal empire. GTA Online dives into this mechanic a bit with the warehouse management application and when it comes to the future of GTA games I definitely would like to see this adapted and playing a larger role to be successful. So many games include a management mechanic in addition to the main game, and being able to really get into the nuts and bolts of managing a criminal empire would be extraordinary!
The news of GTA 6 is a holiday miracle come early, but in the excitement of speculating what the new title will contain, let’s not forget exactly what made the series great in the first place: the classic controversy.
