Since Nintendo won't make a new EarthBound game, a solo indie dev made one

If you've never heard of EarthBound, you're missing out. Also known under its Japanese name, Mother, EarthBound is a series of super-quirky Japanese RPGs published by Nintendo from 1999 to 2006. The third game in that series, Mother 3, was never even officially localized to English despite receiving tons of praise and a massive cult fan following. And beyond a surprise English version of the first game in the series, titled EarthBound Origins, way back in 2015, Nintendo has seemingly abandoned this weird but lovable franchise altogether.
This article isn't about EarthBound, though! It's about Atlas Wept, an RPG that's about to release that's clearly heavily inspired by EarthBound, right down to the globe in its logo. Atlas Wept comes to us via Kbojisoft, a solo indie developer who has been working on the game for several years. It uses a wacky pixel art style and a zany sense of humor that would feel right at home in any of the Mother games.

Atlas Wept also introduces some twists of its own, though. For one thing, instead of traditional turn-based combat, it uses a blend of turn-based and action. Specifically, the action portions are little snippets of bullet-hell gameplay, sort of similar to Undertale. The trailer above also promises a story full of unsettling secrets to uncover, even if it also includes plenty of jokes too.
Atlas Wept will be arriving early in the new year, launching for PC on January 17, 2024. A demo is already available via the game's Steam page if you want to check it out now. Or you can stay tuned to hear impressions from TapTap; one of our editors will be jumping into the game and writing a quick review closer to launch. Stay tuned and keep on smilin'. 😁

Calling all Undertale fans! Atlas Wept is a quirky pixel art RPG about empathy and robot dogs
SHOULD I PLAY ATLAS WEPT? If you’re a fan of EarthBound, Undertale, and other quirky turn-based RPGs, this is definitely a title you should take a look at. Atlas Wept is a pixelated RPG with strong retro vibes. The story alternates between two distinct casts of characters as they embark on a strange adventure. The groups haven’t crossed paths quite yet in my playthrough, but I suspect they’ll run into each other eventually. There’s a free demo available on Steam, so if this game has sparked your curiosity, you should definitely give it a try.

Deathbound is coming to PC in 2024
Inspired by Fromsoftware's Souls games, Trialforge Studio and publisher Tate Multimedia have announced the new action RPG called Deathbound. Trialforge Studio describes the game's world as a brutal one that mixes a technological past and a medieval present and the enemies players will face as unforgiving. The setting of Deathbound is a crumbling civilization where a clash between the forces of faith and science decimated the game’s world, Ziêminal, and the city of Akratya. And it also features a unique mechanic dubbed the Binding System, which essentially allows players to absorb the essence of fallen warriors.
