SHOULD I PLAY THE COSMIC WHEEL SISTERHOOD?
Play it, especially if you love great storytelling. The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood is an enchanting, story-driven game about an exiled witch living on an asteroid in outer space. Although the narrative contains some sensitive material—more on that below—it’s also full of suspense and surprise. TIME PLAYED
I played The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood for four hours. I managed to complete the game and get one of the worst possible endings. Each of the game’s seven chapters took between twenty and forty minutes to finish.
WHAT’S AWESOME ABOUT THE COSMIC WHEEL SISTERHOOD?
• Magic can’t always fix everything. The narrative in The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood follows the sad life of an exiled witch named Fortuna and her future. It may have witchcraft, but this story is not just about hexes or bubbling cauldrons; it delves into the struggles of depression and discrimination. I got to experience this narrative on a deeper level by not only interacting with characters, but controlling the way the story panned out with dialogue choices. This gave me the freedom to explore this world however I wanted and see where Fortuna’s life would end up.
• Fortune-telling and making cards. As a witch of foresight, I could use tarot cards and give characters readings when I interacted with them. Although I couldn’t choose the exact card that would pop up, I could customize my deck to increase the odds of receiving specific lucky (or depressing) results. By choosing the direction of my tarot reading through dialogue, I had the power to alter the story. The randomness introduced into the plot via tarot cards made things exciting. I never knew what was going to happen next, and customizing different cards provided a decent amount of fun, especially when I needed a break from the narrative.
• Music. In a game focused purely on storytelling, there surprisingly isn’t any voice acting in The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood. Nevertheless, the game did a great job of expressing emotion through pleasant, ethereal music.
• A bewitching look. The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood features a pixel art style with a mix of both vibrant and dull colors to create contrast and shadows across different environments and characters. The character design in particular struck me as spectacularly unique and eye-catching.
WHAT SUCKS IN THE COSMIC WHEEL SISTERHOOD?
• It might not be for everyone. Though it’s beautiful, The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood addresses some really serious issues, like self-harm and betrayal. I found it easy to relate to these characters, but the storyline might be triggering for anyone who’s gone through similar experiences. This is a very story-driven game, so it’s only worth venturing into it if you’re fine with encountering a handful of uncomfortable or depressing scenarios.
