DanMachi BATTLE CHRONICLE (Reviewed)
Released: Aug 24, 2023
Danmachi Battle Chronicles is a new Gacha game based on the popular anime: Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? I'd consider it, a bit more unique than other Gacha games due to my knowledge of the anime and manga as a whole. What I could discern from the initial couple of hours of time gated gameplay, it acts much like any other, but with a greater emphasis on more hands-on physical action similar to Genshin without the open world features and more story driven features.
ISSUES
Crashing / connection issues
Before I could even play the game. I had to try logging in and launching the game on both Android/PC several times over 2 hours, but each attempt resulted in an instant crash before I could even download the game. This has been going on for a few days now but seems to have resolved over time. I am unsure if this would effect other players that are just now getting it and downloading it to their own devices.
The developers are aware of issues and have been trying to fix it. But I was capable of logging in and initiating the download without any future issues in this regard.
Bugged Skills
The characters in the above graphic each have their own set of abilities and ultimate abilities / limit breakers. However, after some time of playing, I observed that the PC version of the game would occasionally cease functioning as a PC port and revert to a mobile version that only worked if you touched the buttons themselves with the cursor of your mouse rather than the abilities hotkeys.
Even then, these skills would normally be inoperable until the game was completely reset, while the other characters would be fine as shown by their ultimate skills currently being on cooldown while Finn Deimne still couldn't use his.
STORY
It is based on the anime
If you're familiar with the anime, you'll recognize many of the characters and locations you'll visit during the story quest mode, where you'll watch cutscenes and gameplay sequences that correspond to the anime with a 1 to 1 recreation, which is great!
The meeting of Bell Cranel and Ais Wallenstein to his adventures through the anime. You'll be following in its footsteps while facing enemies in between these moments, the most of which are random outside of the bosses like the Minotaur from episode 1 or even up to the Silverback Gorilla that rampages through the streets.
PRESENTATION
Fantastic
The graphics of this game look great when combined with the audio and displayed while incorporating anime scenes and blending them with gameplay components.
The music is really good. In my perspective, it's not overly done, and it's really appropriate for the game and anime as a whole when it comes down to it.
However, the game's initial setup and tutorials were extremely long and tedious, even if they were very helpful in understanding the game's features and how to correctly employ rotations and resist / weaknesses. Instead of holding your hand like it was your very first Gacha, I believe it could have been provided to the player with a quicker method as these are not skippable and take up quite a bit of your time.
GAMEPLAY
Setup
Before battle, you must ensure that your current setup is equal to or greater than the current recommended amount. If you try to fight a conflict for which you are unprepared for, you will not be able to finish it as efficiently as if you were prepared.
You can certainly try, but it is a time sink and a lot of safe gameplay involved, but would be nearly impossible with boss fights due to you're inability to break them.
Character Action
The fighting is well-controlled. You can control your characters manually, or you can enable the Auto AI, which will run around the dungeon for you and take out monsters with fairly simple attacks and skills for much easier battling and material farming.
They will not be able to dodge attacks and will die quickly. They can one-shot their opponents. Boss battles are better off being controlled by the player for this reason.
FEATURES
Cutscenes from the anime
This game draws its references and story from the anime. As a result, many of the sequences and images will be lifted from there. It's kind of annoying, because I've seen the full anime and know exactly what happens to the gang as they progress deeper into the dungeons. So I really wanted to bypass it all, but I had no choice but to tap the screen repeatedly, which was still quite slow as there was no skipping the dialog sections, but you can skip the cinematic movies, which was odd to me.
PvP and player events
Do you want to compete against other players in PvP or Events? The game contains a part that you unlock as you progress in player level that allows you to compete with other players for rewards. The Magic Stone Scramble and Battle Arena are their current events along side others whenever they do decide to swap them out.
Magic Stone Scramble is a game in which 8 players run around an open arena fighting monsters for crystals while the arena shrinks like a Battle Royale. Each player can kill one another for these crystals for them to pick up. The players with the highest points earns a lot of currency for pulls and purchases and PvP level progress.
Battle Arena is a hands-off auto-battler mode in which you select a fighter and they all fight on their own. It is preferable to have a group of heroes who operate well together rather than a whole team of strong DPS with no real healers.
Familia Guilds
It's quite straightforward. Join a guild, or Familia as they are referred to in the anime, to receive perks and to play with other players for advice and recommendations.
Gacha rolls
Once you've entered the actual game. The game gives you 10 free rolls; I got 2 UR on my first pull. However, I believe this was done on purpose to give you a false sense of security when it comes to how frequently you may pull these UR heroes.
The pulls that followed were mostly SSR and one other UR help card. So I could be wrong and it could actually be pretty frequent, but this is normally how these games pull you into purchasing from their store for guaranteed UR drop rates once an event.
Story and Quest modes
You will spend the majority of your time playing through story modes, both Normal (with movies) and Hard / Very Hard (with combat alone), for material drops that will help you increase your heroes' power and limit break them so they can get even stronger up to a maximum level of 60/60, always be on the lookout for upgrades.
Character Bonds & Upgrades
Aside from physically improving heroes. You can talk to them and improve their bonds with you in order to gain rewards that directly boost their talents while also providing them with some extra power ups like as greater damage or base health.
You can boost their levels by giving them gifts or by keeping them in your group and facing difficult opponents. This is by far the simplest method that does not require the use of currency but rather the use of stamina which is pretty easy to obtain as a new player, but slowly becomes much more tedious as you use more and more stamina.
CONCLUSION
It's pretty good despite limitations
While the game does have some severe startup issues on both the mobile and PC versions, the PC version is more problematic. It provides a lot of activities for you to do on a daily basis if you are capable of loading up the in the first place. It's enough to give you up to about 3-4 hours of gameplay, unless you're willing to spend a lot of money to keep purchasing food to increase your stamina, which is your form of energy to keep playing the game, then you could play it all day really.
You start with a large quantity, which is sufficient to get you to Story Mode 4, but once you arrive, you quickly start to run out and also start to run into power issues, making each boss harder and more difficult to take on until your next daily reset and stamina which will aid you in your ability to power up more heroes to take them on.
The final game does not appear to be all that tempting. While I haven't reached that place yet. I believe the game is still in development, and if you ever did reach the finish. It would most likely be a waiting game for fresh occurrences rather than a game you'd want to play on a regular basis at that stage.
This concludes my views of this game; while my opinions may be met with criticism, that is what distinguishes gamers; you don't have to like the same things as others, nor do you have to agree with them.
If you want to catch me on one of my streams or locate me on social media, you may do so at the following locations, I'm always playing something new.
