SHOULD I PLAY GUNBRELLA?
Play it. Instead of reinventing the wheel with flashy features or next-gen visuals, Gunbrella perfects the standard elements of a side-scrolling action-adventure game. The result is a wildly entertaining journey of platforming, exploration, and monster-slaying. TIME PLAYED
I played Gunbrella for four hours, traversing four of the game’s five areas. I’ve already defeated two bosses in the game and completed nearly a dozen main quests. I’m currently trying to make my way to the last area in the game.
WHAT’S AWESOME ABOUT GUNBRELLA?
• It’s a charming game. Gunbrella doesn’t really do anything showy or super original with its gameplay. It focuses on simple runnin’ and gunnin’, and frankly, that’s good enough. The straightforward, uncomplicated gameplay is executed perfectly to provide a bloody good time.
• Exploring caves and buildings. I had a blast exploring the many hidden areas in Gunbrella’s massive Metroidvania-style world and scavenging for loot to upgrade my gear. Although I only ventured into four of the five areas, I enjoyed traversing the scenic and vibrant environments in this world and slaying its ugly monsters.
• Aesthetic style. The jazzy background music in Gunbrella makes pumping shotgun shells and blitzing across caverns feel amazing. On top of that, the pixel art style that envelops this world looks absolutely beautiful.
WHAT SUCKS ABOUT GUNBRELLA?
• You need to pay close attention. If you’re not used to side-scrolling action-adventure games, you run the risk of getting lost when playing Gunbrella. Although a quest tab reminded me what to do next, it didn’t direct me exactly where to go. In a few instances when I tried skimming through dialogue and missed vital information, it cost me a lot of time figuring out how to get to my destination.
• No map. Part of the reason getting lost was so easy is that Gunbrella inexplicably does not have an in-game map. I had to rely on my memory to get through the game, which wasn’t extremely difficult but definitely led to some unnecessary backtracking.
