With the popularity of this year's HBO TV adaptation, The Last of Us is arguably as popular as its ever been. But even popularity can't saved a doomed project.
In a blog post today, developer Naughty Dog revealed that the long-in-development The Last of Us Online has been canceled. This project had been in development for several years now and was seen by many as a replacement for the "Factions" multiplayer mode from the original The Last of Us. Factions (and any multiplayer mode) was notably missing in 2020's The Last of Us Part II.
"We know this news will be tough for many, especially our dedicated The Last of Us Factions community," Naughty Dog wrote in the blog post. "We're equally crushed at the studio, as we were looking forward to putting it in your hands."
In explaining the decision, Naughty Dog said the studio realized as The Last of Us Online came together that in order for the game to succeed, the developer would have to become a live-service team focusing all its resources on post-launch support for years to come. After much internal discussion, they decided that wasn't what they're interested in.
"So, we had two paths in front of us: become a solely live service games studio or continue to focus on single-player narrative games that have defined Naughty Dog's heritage," the blog post reads. Having picked the latter option, Naughty Dog confirmed that it has more than one new single-player game in development right now.
While this will leave many fans disappointed, it's certainly not the last we'll hear from The Last of Us. The Last of Us Part II Remastered is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 next month with improved visuals, behind-the-scenes features, and a new roguelike mode called No Return.
The HBO show has also been renewed for a second season, and a third game has been heavily rumored although it remains unconfirmed by Naughty Dog. Some fans don't think a third game should happen, though. Check out the post below for one TapTap editor's thoughts.
Respect to Naughty Dog for remaining true to their visions. You wouldn't ask From Software to make something cute either. Sure, they could've outsourced, but would that really be TLOU? Probably not.
Stop acting like a child. That’s called life. Stuff happens. Life isn’t all about video games. Get off your fat a$$ and go outside and enjoy what else the world has to offer. Stop spending all your time worshipping the all mighty video game console. That’s pathetic!
