In the world of role-playing games (RPGs), turn-based RPGs and idle RPGs offer distinct engagement styles, influencing how players interact and enjoy the game. Understanding these genres can highlight the dissonance players may experience when game genres clash with actual gameplay control.
Turn-Based RPGs: Active Strategy
Turn-based RPGs, like "Final Fantasy" and "Pokémon," require players to engage in strategic planning and decision-making. Players control every action in battles, selecting moves and anticipating enemy strategies.
Active Participation: Players are involved in every decision, fulfilling the desire for direct control.
Strategic Thinking: Planning each move engages players’ cognitive skills, creating a sense of accomplishment.
Dissonance: Playing an RPG but having limited controls.
Idle RPGs: Minimal Interaction
Idle RPGs, such as "AFK Arena," progress automatically, even when players are not actively engaged. Players set up their teams, but battles occur without constant input.
Passive Participation: The focus is on optimising setups rather than direct control.
Incremental Progress: Seeing characters grow stronger over time with minimal effort can be satisfying in its own way.
Dissonance: Being AFK from an RPG game but still making progress and receiving rewards.
🕹️ What are your thoughts on semi-active RPG games?

Not just video games.. A time will come when humanity will invent ways to operate our real lives on full auto mode where androids or A.I do everything for us, and in result we would become obese & laid back to the point where our chairs will be our partners for life. It's like that scenario the animation named 'Wall E' had portrayed the future state and possibility of humanity ~ Coming back to games, AFK RPG wasn't even a thing until 5-6 years ago. Before that period, every mobile game requires active participation of players which not only maximised entertainment but also boosted our critical thinking ability. I honestly miss those times. Yet, people nowadays only complain about the auto mode option being there in MMORPGs while on other hand there is a whole AFK genre of games that are in existence, which is quite ironic ~

Author likedit's interesting to think about really. I think there's two reasons why the AFK genre came to be, 1 because of how busy people's daily schedules are now. and 2, it's just a very lucrative business, Semi-Active RPGs have so many in app purchases for players to keep Head of the curve while requiring less time to be developed (see isn't to say it doesn't take time, just much less than an open world rpg for example).
