Towaga: Among Shadows is a casual but insanely fun action-adventure game with beautiful 2D visuals and smooth animation that explores a world of darkness from the perspective of a light-bringing warrior. After an hour of monster slaying, I’ve come to enjoy Towaga: Among Shadows’s simple shoot ‘em up gameplay and storyline.
In Towaga: Among Shadows, I embarked on an adventure to save a stunning Aztec-themed world from evil monsters seeking to ravage everything in its sight. I had to battle against various creatures using abilities and a beam of light that I could redirect willingly with the swoosh and hold of a finger. I’ve found the story mode more enjoyable so far, despite only dabbling in the game’s survival mode, but I’ve yet to play multiplayer.
The story and survival mode features two different ways to enjoy the game. The most common style of gameplay is where I faced waves of monsters while being stuck on a platform in the middle of the screen. I found this gameplay pretty challenging because it was relatively easy for multiple monsters to swoop in and cause a lot of damage. If I wasn’t paying attention and didn’t shoot these monsters down, I’d lose health and eventually die, forcing me to restart the story level or survival mode. The only way to defend against incoming attacks was to fight back and this simple gameplay excited me. The second style involved me soaring through a restricted space in the sky while trying to kill waves of approaching monsters. It wasn’t that different from being stuck on a platform, but I found this gameplay style more challenging because I had to react much quicker and maneuver around threats while also shooting down incoming creatures. If there's one thing I'm terribly bad at, it's reacting quickly and multitasking.
Despite this, I had a great time playing Towaga: Among Shadows. I personally enjoyed traversing through the game's story mode and all the stages it threw at me. During these stages, I encountered new monsters and acquired new abilities and resources to upgrade my damage or health. The greatest part of this adventure though was riding along to find out more about the story. Although the story wasn’t too deep, I enjoyed learning more about it and this dark and mysterious world I landed in. The story did a decent job of immersing me into Towaga: Among Shadows and made the gameplay feel worthwhile.
Besides classic shoot 'em up gameplay and a decently compelling storyline, Towaga: Among Shadows also features gorgeous graphics and smooth animation. From the character design to the environment and even the interface, everything in Towaga: Among Shadows looks beautiful and polished and functions smoothly. From head to toe, Towaga: Among Shadows has charmed me through its gameplay, storyline, and visuals and scored itself the title of one of the few shoot 'em up games that I'd recommend to anyone.
