PLAY IT OR SKIP IT?
Play it. When I first played the test version of Snowbreak: Containment Zone last month, I had high praise for the game but I didn’t think it would get any better than it was back then. I was wrong. I’m blown away by the game’s improvements which have propelled it to greater heights as a truly one-of-a-kind gacha RPG.
TIME PLAYED
I played Snowbreak: Containment Zone for four hours. I managed to complete over thirty missions, taking me through two chapters in the game’s story, as well as farming resources in some side missions. Each mission took between three to ten minutes to complete, not including cutscenes. I’m currently trying to overcome the third chapter’s boss. I’ve also reached account level 19 and upgraded four characters to level 19 as well.
WHAT’S AWESOME
• Turning my enemies into Swiss cheese. Shooting at robots and mercenaries in Snowbreak is a smooth experience. Dynamic movement and frictionless animations lend combat an explosive feel.
• Living in a futuristic, dystopian world. When I played Snowbreak: Containment Zone in closed beta, I was astounded by the quality of its storytelling, but the full release outperforms that first taste. The narrative explores a run-down dystopian world with robots and hooligans, finding a good mix between witty banter and serious drama. I found the focus on emotionally-driven stories with characters I could relate to especially appealing.
• A gloomy vision of the future. Snowbreak is full of beautifully eerie dystopian environments. Everything from buildings to vehicles and random objects comes together fantastically well to create a compelling and fully realized illustration of a dangerous future.
• It’s a much harder game now. Snowbreak: Containment Zone is much more challenging than it was in beta, but not to the point of being overbearingly tedious or difficult. This balanced level of difficulty makes progression feel worthwhile and rewarding.
• Satisfying sounds. Snowbreak’s most enjoyable moments were carried by the sound of gunfire and bullets hitting their targets. Whether I was wielding a heavy magnum pistol or a lightweight submachine gun, every weapon is enhanced by hard-hitting audio. I especially loved the explosive impact and echo of the game’s shotguns.
WHAT SUCKS
• Character designs are still a weak point. The characters in Snowbreak: Containment Zone look like shiny plastic dolls. The fashion and overall style of these characters wasn’t bad, but I really wish the game had more lifelike fighters to connect better with the dystopian world the game portrays.
• Rewards are doled out too slowly. Most of Snowbreak’s rewards are locked behind progression, which means I spent most of my early time upgrading only four characters. When I played during the closed beta, I managed to pull over 190 times in the character banner. In this current playthrough of the full release, though, I only received enough resources to pull twenty times, which left me with a depressingly small crew of characters to power up and play with. I know it’s common for gacha games to hand out prizes much faster during testing, but I still wish Snowbreak was more generous now.
