SHOULD I PLAY LONG GONE DAYS?
Play it. Long Gone Days is a narrative-driven RPG that focuses on the unseen side of war. It follows Rourke, a young soldier that’s taken aback when he discovers the sneaky actions of The Core, the paramilitary group he’s a part of. Now, he seeks to uncover dark mysteries behind his entire existence. I thought Long Gone Days was both charming and moving, but since it’s an extremely story-focused adventure, it might not be for everyone. TIME PLAYED
I played Long Gone Days for four hours. I’ve finished over a dozen quests so far and have made my way through the Russian city of Kaliningrad. I’ve also made some new connections and have begun slowly uncovering information about the impending war and the state of the world.
WHAT’S AWESOME ABOUT LONG GONE DAYS?
• War, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing. Long Gone Days doesn’t hold back when it comes to the brutal nature of war and I love it for that. The game dives into Rourke’s life as a soldier who deserted a subterranean paramilitary state to stop people from dying after finding out the devastating truth about his peers.
I found this story really moving because It paints a moving picture of what real people go through during military conflicts. There’s a heavy focus on interpreters and language barriers, and it shows that ending a war takes more than just bullets and guns. The narrative is a little dark, but it’s suspenseful, well-written, and thought-provoking.
• Exploring cities. I had a lot of fun exploring Long Gone Days as I searched for loot to use in battles. The world isn’t insanely huge, but there’s still a decent amount of space to investigate. The game’s also really beautiful and walking around forests and broken cities felt pretty relaxing.
• Fighting drones. Long Gone Days features a simple turn-based combat system similar to Pokémon where I used attacks and items to damage enemies, apply buffs or debuffs, and heal allies. The combat wasn't that challenging, and it didn't really provide anything out of the ordinary, but I still enjoyed the battles.
• Chill music. Long Gone Days features a mix of lo-fi and classical music that makes killing enemies and drones feel oddly peaceful. The music really sets the tone for a heroic adventure and is the perfect complement to a charming story about ending violence.
WHAT SUCKS ABOUT LONG GONE DAYS?
• It’s really story heavy. Long Gone Days is narrative-driven, and while I enjoyed it, the focus on storytelling and dialogue might not appeal to everyone. The story took up more than half of my four-hour playthrough, and while I enjoyed picking dialogue choices and raising morale with friends, the game doesn’t have that much else. If you’re not up for a story-focused adventure, this game might not be your cup of tea.
