7 of my favorite horror games that'll get your blood pumping for Halloween

I’ve never really been attracted to horror movies or scary games growing up. It was only when I became an adult that I started watching movies like
The Conjuring
,
The Babadook
, and
Insidious
and played games like
Dead by Daylight
or
Dead Space
in my free time. I always loved the exhilaration that came with being scared. Although I don’t naturally do well with the genre, there’s nothing in this world that makes me feel more alive than being terrified. Whether that’s because of a bloody murderer or a slimy chest-bursting alien, horror games have always kept my blood running. In celebration of this genre and my favorite time of the year, I’ve listed seven of my favorite horror games that’ll definitely get your adrenaline pumping.

Dead by Daylight will always be my favorite asymmetrical horror game. I grew up playing this game as a teenager and have stuck by it ever since. I personally hate playing the victim in most horror games which is exactly why Dead by Daylight fits right up my alley. I get to play the killer and hunt down other players which fills me with joy. It sounds a little sadistic, but I always think to myself, “It’s better them, than me.” If you’re looking for a multiplayer horror game where you get to play as the nasty murderer, Dead by Daylight is your bloody calling.

I don’t know what’s worse—being stranded in outer space with everyone on your ship either dead or turned into a monster with swords for arms—or being forced to face those monsters to survive. Either way, they’re both horrifying and grim scenarios. Dead Space has always been a game that I can’t play without help or at least another person in the room because of how scary it is. I guess it’s the monsters that get me, but this sci-fi survival horror game isn’t for the faint of heart and that’s pretty much why I love it. It’s horrifying and bloody and it’ll leave you with nightmares for days. Well, at least it did for me.

I like to think of Deceit as the scary version of Among Us. It’s a social deduction game where players must figure out who the killer is to survive and escape. Obviously as said before, getting to play the killer in games like Deceit exhilarates me. Mind-gaming my way out of conversations and tricking other players to hide my identity as the killer feels challenging but rewarding when pulled off. And the best part of it all? I get to sabotage tasks, hunt, and kill people! If you feel the same way or enjoy winning as the survivor in games like Among Us or Goose Goose Duck, Deceit could be for you.

I got to play The Texas Chain Saw Massacre earlier this year and I had a lot of fun. The game is basically Dead by Daylight but with a lot more mechanics. Although it’s not as straightforward as Dead by Daylight, the complex gameplay of escaping from three killers instead of one provides a lot of challenges. With the right people, it can be really fun. But it does take some time to get the hang of, so if you’re a fan of Dead by Daylight or Friday the 13th: The Game, this might be the challenge you’ve been searching for.

Ever wanted to play Minecraft but on super-duper extreme hardcore horror mode? Well, The Forest is the game you’ve never heard of but always wanted to try. It’s an open world survival horror game where you get to build walls and houses while trying to uncover why your child has been taken away by cannibalistic mutants. It’s a great horror game to play with friends and I personally loved The Forest just because I got to build stuff and shoot monsters. I mean, if you’re going to be stranded on an island, at least make your home pretty, right?

Nothing beats Left 4 Dead 2. I remember playing this game with friends as a teenager and having the time of my life. Shooting down zombies with SMGs and shotguns or blowing up hordes of them with pipe bombs felt extremely fun. Even after all these years since its release in 2009, Left 4 Dead 2 continues to be one of my favorite horror zombie shooters out there. Perfect choice to play with friends and family.

It’s not the ocean that scares me, it’s what’s in it. And if you’ve ever played or heard of Subnautica, you’ll understand why this game takes the cake for the scariest deep-sea exploration game in the world. While crafting stuff and building submarines feels wholesome and enjoyable, exploring a dark and ominous ocean full of gigantic fish and monsters feels absolutely horrifying. I highly recommend giving Subnautica a try if you like open-world exploration games or the Disney movie, Finding Nemo.

5 of the Bloodiest Horror Games 🩸
Written by @Jay Hunter In life, you’re one of two types of people: someone that absolutely hates anything scary, or an avid lover of all sorts of frightening, goosebump-inducing horrors. There’s very little in-between; you either enjoy suspense and jump scares, or you absolutely despise them. Then again, some of these games might convert you toward liking horror games, or at the very least encourage you to look at your mobile screens much longer than you normally anticipated. Still, this collection isn’t for the fainthearted.
