The Borderlands movie trailer has left a significant portion of fans (myself included) underwhelmed and disappointed, as evidenced by a slew of critical comments on YouTube. The viewers were quick to point out numerous flaws.
Firstly, many fans criticised the casting choices. The decision to cast prominent actors like Kevin Hart as Roland and Cate Blanchett as Lilith sparked widespread backlash. Commenters argued that the actors did not match the physicality or personality of the characters they were portraying (I mean seriously, who cast Kevin Hart as Roland 😭), which led to a disconnect between the beloved in-game characters and their on-screen depictions. One user remarked, "Kevin Hart as Roland? What a joke. He doesn’t fit the character at all," (FACTS!!!!🔥🔥🔥) highlighting a common sentiment that the casting feels like a misstep.
Another major point of contention was the trailer's tone and visual style. Fans expressed that the movie failed to capture the chaotic, colorful, and irreverent spirit of the Borderlands games (to which I absolutely agree, it looks like another case of I didn'ttry it but I'llmake the movie 🤡). "This looks like a generic sci-fi action movie, not Borderlands," one comment read, encapsulating the disappointment over the perceived loss of the franchise's unique identity. The lack of the series' signature cel-shaded art style was a particular sore point, with many feeling that the visual departure made the movie look bland and uninspired.
The script and dialogue snippets shown in the trailer also drew ire. Lines intended to be humorous or edgy fell flat, with several commenters describing the dialogue as "cringe-worthy" and "forced." One particularly harsh critique stated, "The jokes are painfully unfunny. It’s like they don’t understand the humor of the games at all."
Additionally, the action sequences shown in the trailer did not fare much better. Fans noted that the action felt generic and lacked the frenetic energy that defines Borderlands combat. "The action looks so dull and uninspired. Where's the chaos and madness we love?" a commenter questioned, summarising the overall dissatisfaction with how the action was portrayed.
Overall, the fanbase feels let down by the Borderlands movie trailer. The casting choices, visual style, tone, dialogue, and action sequences all appear to have missed the mark, leaving fans questioning whether the film can do justice to the iconic game series they cherish.
