After a decade long hiatus Flappy Bird is back, after an announcement on September 12th 2024. The game is led by the newly formed 'Flappy Bird Foundation'.
The release dates haven't been set in stone but a Web browser version will be available later this year, with Android and iOS versions arriving in 2025.
This new version promises several new characters such as Peng the Penguin, a unicorn Bird named Quirky and a robot called Tekno. In addition to the classic mode, the game will feature new modes such as "rivals" where players compete against 99 other players, as well as a practice mode and a basketball mode.
The controversy surrounding this game's return is regarding ownership, though they have acquired the rights legally due to the expiry from the original creator. Originally developed by Dong Ngyuen, Flappy Bird was pulled from app stores in 2014 due to his guilt over its overwhelming addictiveness.
Additionally, there is much skepticism surrounding the foundations cryptic ties to blockchain gaming. Some fans are feeling uneasy about this murky process around acquiring the game rights and the potential commercialisation and possible introduction of loot boxes in the game.
This story is starting to get sad, I won't be making anymore posts on the topic. Here's an update on the situation by The Verge if you are interested, https://www.theverge.com/2024/9/15/24245216/flappy-bird-creator-dong-nguyen-not-involved-new-game
