All done with Super Mario RPG? Here's the colorful action-RPG you'll want to play next

Very few RPGs manage to capture the sense of whimsy and adventure of Super Mario RPG, so when one comes along, we take notice. That's why we couldn't look away when we saw the absolutely adorable and fun-looking Born of Bread.
This RPG puts players into the shoes of Loaf, a "flour golem" who must journey the world and make new friends while solving a perplexing mystery. Like Super Mario RPG, Born of Bread's combat system is technically turn-based, but different moves allow players to do extra damage by completing timing-based challenges. So it requires a little more attention than the average turn-based RPG, where you might just tap "attack" over and over.
Born of Bread is clearly inspired by Nintendo and Square's Super Nintendo classic, but it also sets itself apart in some big ways. For one, the beautiful art style looks like something straight out of a Cartoon Network show. And the game also has unique twists on its systems. For example, you can actually "stream" your fights to an in-game audience who will make requests for specific moves or feats, and if you pull them off, you'll win extra prizes.
If Born of Bread sounds like just the taste you've been craving, then keep an eye out. The game launches on December 5, 2023 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. We'll be sharing our thoughts with a review from one of TapTap's editors close to launch!
Paper Mario meets Cartoon Network in this quirky, bread-based RPG
SHOULD I PLAY BORN OF BREAD?
Born of Bread feels like an unofficial successor to the Paper Mario series, so if you’re a fan of those games, you’ll definitely want to check it out. There were times when I thought Born of Bread could’ve used a little more time in the oven, but I was still won over by its playful dialogue and loveable cast of characters. If you dig games with a wacky, silly sense of humor, this is going to charm you too.

SHOULD I PLAY SUPER MARIO RPG?
That depends. Do you like feeling joy? Do you get a kick out of taking part in pure, unabashed, childlike glee and wonder? If yes, then duh, absolutely jump into the wonderful world of Super Mario RPG as soon as possible. But if you’re more of a Bowser-esque figure who prefers ruining the day for innocent toadlings, or if you prefer your RPGs avoid cracking jokes at all costs, then maybe this one just isn’t for you. Or maybe this will be the game that finally breaks through the thick, Grinch-esque barrier of cynicism and unhappiness you’ve surrounded yourself in. Who knows?
